ACCI Missions fieldworkers Alastair & Marlene Paterson and Eugene & Fiona Gebert are currently serving in Fukuoka, Japan which is approximately 100kms from the epicentre of the recent earthquakes in Kumamoto.
After seeing first hand the need after the earthquake, the Patersons and Geberts are partnering with Japan AOG to provide relief as figures come to light of 70,000+ displaced, thousands injured and the death toll currently at 47.
Update from Alastair & Marlene
"As you'd be aware we had 2 earthquakes in succession, one on Thursday night (now considered a pre-shock) and another even stronger one (7.3) at around 1:30am on Saturday morning. We are currently partnering with 2 other churches to respond as effectively as we can, and today Alastair has headed to Kumamoto with 2 volunteers from our church here in Fukuoka, as well as 3 pastors from another church, with a 3 tonne truck and 8-seater van loaded with supplies.
We understand that news coverage in Australia has been sketchy, but several dozen lives were lost, hundreds of buildings and roads were damaged, landslides occurred, bridges collapsed, and recent reports suggest that around 250,000 evacuees are currently in temporary shelters. We are about 100km from the epicentre of the quake and are still experiencing tremors, so please continue to pray for the people of Kumamoto who have experienced great loss, those who have been injured, and those who are currently homeless in extremely difficult living conditions. Pray also for safe travel for all those taking supplies, and that we can continue to partner in a practical way with others to show the love of Jesus and shine His light in this time of crisis."
Donations to this appeal will go towards assisting the relief efforts of the Japan AOG.
